Thoughts from Executive Director Rachelle Dardeau
June 2013

Are you ready for the summer? We at the SCV Senior Center certainly are! There is plenty going on in our community starting this month.

Get a head start on celebrating Father’s Day by coming out to Central Park on Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for our inaugural Touch a Truck event. This family friendly day will feature vehicles of all sorts and sizes that kids of all ages will love getting close to. There will also be live music, food and so much more. Our budget-friendly ticket price of $5 per person directly benefits the Senior Center, and as an added bonus, dads who come accompanied by their kids will get in for free! For more information or to purchase tickets in advance, visit our Touch a Truck page.

Speaking of Father’s Day, I want to wish a very Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. Our Senior Center family is full of many fathers – and grandfathers and great-grandfathers! – who have been dedicated and loving to their families through the years. So, to each of them I say thank you for the role you have played in shaping your children’s lives. The positive influence of good fathers in our community can never be overstated.

June is also national Great Outdoors Month, and while the weather is still relatively mild, why not get outside in our beautiful community, breath some fresh air and give your body some important exercise? Whether it’s a walk along one of Santa Clarita’s many shaded paseos, or a hike one of the many surrounding trails, there are plenty of ways to get out and get moving. It’s great for your body and your mind.

While it’s still mild, as we enter summer and prepare for the hot months of the year, it’s vital to ensure you take good care of yourself. When temperatures climb, make sure you’re staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other fluids. Additionally, try to stay inside, out of the scorching heat and sun, and always remember that the SCV Senior Center is an official Los Angeles County cooling station. Seniors especially can be susceptible to the intense summer heat. So if it’s too hot at home, you can always come here and relax!

Finally, I want to remind all the golfers out there that our 5th annual Summer Showdown at the Tournament Players Club Valencia is coming up, Monday, June 24. This is a great opportunity to spend a day on one of Southern California’s premier golf courses, all while raising support for the SCV Senior Center. Space is still available for single players and groups, as well as sponsors. For more information call (661) 259-9444 or visit our Events page, where you can download a registration form.

It’s going to be a great summer here at the SCV Senior Center, and we’re looking forward to enjoying it together with you.
